本論文使用具有消費者對於員工和客戶對企業社會責任 (CSR) 偏好模型發現 CSR 活動雖然成本高昂,但可以作為對利益相關者關係的無形投資,並幫助公司從外部中斷中快速恢復過來。另使用有毒物質排放清單 (TRI) 數據庫中的工廠地點數據,我們發現具有較高 CSR 評級的企業的經營業績受重大自然災害的影響要小得多。然後,我們研究了 參與CSR 能保護企業免受重大自然災害影響的員工和客戶機制。我們發現企業社會責任通過提高員工滿意度(與更高的災後生產力相關聯)和提高客戶滿意度(與更穩定的災後銷售相關聯)來幫助企業度過重大自然災害。 Using a stylized model with employees’ and customers’ preferences for corporate social responsibility (CSR), we hypothesize that CSR activities, while costly, serve as an intangible investment in stakeholder relationships and help firms recover from external disruptions. Using factory location data from the toxic release inventory (TRI) database to specify firms’ geographic distribution, we find that the operating performance of firms with higher CSR ratings is much less affected by major natural disasters. We then examine the employee and customer mechanisms through which CSR engagement shields firms against major natural disasters. We find that CSR helps firms survive major natural disasters by enhancing employee satisfaction, which is associated with higher post-disaster productivity, and enhancing customer satisfaction, which is associated with more stable post-disaster sales. |
